The role of altered bile acid metabolism in the steatorrhea of experimental blind loop.

چکیده
Although it is well documented that blind loop of the small intestine, either spontaneously occurring (2) or experimentally produced (3-5), is associated with steatorrhea, the mechanism for this abnormality has not been demonstrated. A pathogenic role of bacteria is strongly suggested in this and closely associated conditions by the observations that bacterial overgrowth of the small bowel occurs (6, 7) and that the steatorrhea usually responds to antibacterial therapy (2, 4, 5). In the present study in vivo alteration of bile acid metabolism in dogs with experimental blind loop steatorrhea was investigated. Marked differences from normal were observed, the most notable abnormality being considerable conversion of conjugated to unconjugated acids within the small bowel of the experimental animals. Two experimental findings suggest that this alteration of bile acid metabolism plays a role in blind loop steatorrhea. First, intraluminal micelle formation, a probable step in fat absorption that occurs optimally in the presence of conjugated bile

Metabolism of hydroxy fatty acids in dogs with steatorrhea secondary to experimentally produced intestinal blind loops.
Several aspects of the metabolism of hydroxy fatty acids were studied in dogs with steatorrhea resulting from an experimentally produced jejunal blind loop. In these animals hydroxy acids were present in the stool in amounts far above normal. These acids disappeared from the feces during tetracycline administration and after exclusion of the blind loop-both procedures that corrected the steator...
متن کاملBile salt regulation of fatty acid absorption and esterification in rat everted jejunal sacs in vitro and into thoracic duct lymph in vivo.
This study was performed to investigate whether the malabsorption of fat in the blind loop syndrome is due to the presence of free bile acids or to a deficiency of conjugated bile salts produced by bacterial degradation of normal bile salts, as well as to learn something of the mechanisms by which bile salts might regulate fat absorption. In the everted gut sac of the rat in vitro, conjugated b...
متن کاملKinetics of bile acid metabolism in experimental blind loop syndrome.
In an experimental model of the contaminated small bowel syndrome, Eriksson's washout technique was used to study bile salt metabolism. Bile salt secretion rate was increased from 204-7 +/- SD 36-5 mumol/100 g body weight/24 h to 329-9 +/- 146-6, pool size from 33-4 +/- 5-4 mumol/100 g BW to 42-5 +/- 7-2, and biliary flow from 6-6 +/- 1-72 ml/100 g BW/24 h to 8-4 +/- 2.1. Detailed analysis of t...
متن کاملThe Effects of Cholestasis and Cirrhosis on Gastric Acid and Pepsin Secretions in Rat: Involvement of Nitric Oxide
Objective(s) The liver has major role in the organism homeostasis, interactions with other systems, synthesis and metabolism of bile production, drug detoxification and hormone inactivation. Cholestasis can be defined as an impairment of the bile flow which can lead to hepatocytes necrosis and finally cirrhosis. Some studies reported a gastric acid secretion reduction in cirrhotic subjects, wh...
متن کاملTargeted deletion of the ileal bile acid transporter eliminates enterohepatic cycling of bile acids in mice.
The ileal apical sodium bile acid cotransporter participates in the enterohepatic circulation of bile acids. In patients with primary bile acid malabsorption, mutations in the ileal bile acid transporter gene (Slc10a2) lead to congenital diarrhea, steatorrhea, and reduced plasma cholesterol levels. To elucidate the quantitative role of Slc10a2 in intestinal bile acid absorption, the Slc10a2 gen...
